Major Cities:

Muscat - Muscat city, once a thriving and strategically located port of the Arabian peninsula in ancient times, slid into oblivion in the early 20 th century. Today, it is the capital of the Sultanate and has been restored to its former glory. Muscat 's quaint old buildings co-exist with the modern new commercial and residential quarters giving the city an ambience of its own.

Salalah - Salalah , the city has many historical and archaeological sites which shows writings, inscriptions and signs to prove that series of civilisations have been transmittted from one generation to another in the city. Salalah with its beautiful beaches and green landscapes attract local and international tourists especially during the Khareef Festival, held during the months of July, August and September of every year.

Nizwa - The oasis city of Nizwa , the largest in the interior province was the capital of Oman in the 6 th and 7 th centuries. Today, it remains one of the most popular tourist attractions with its historical buildings and imposing ports built in the mid 17 th century by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'ribi. The town's immense palm oasis stretches for eight kilometres along the course of two wadis. It is famous for this bustling souq where tourists can buy exquisite copper and jewellery and other craft items. Nizwa is enclosed by a series of mountains upon which the famous green mountain, Jabal Al Akhdar lies. Nizwa which depending on your interests, is an oasis famous for dates, center of Islamic studies or the possessor of a massive and elegantly restored fort and palace.

Sur - Sur is an ancient port and located 310 kilometers away on the east coast of the capital city, Muscat . On its port were embarked several goods for exports and was famous as the factory of traditional dhow in the country. Although, few of the shipbuilding yards are run by private companies, the traditional methods of creating the sea vessels are kept. It is almost believed that the legendary sailor, Sindbad has originated from Sur. Sur is also famous for its green turtles nesting on the beaches of Ras Al Hadd and Ras Al Jinz for centuries.

Sohar - Sohar is near the coast and been named after the great grandson of Noah (refer to the Biblical story about Noah's Arc), was the capital of Oman being the main city of trade many centuries ago. Has reached the height of its prosperity and fame in the 9th and 10th centuries AD, described as "the hallway to China, the store house of the East". The most impressive building is the fort of Sohar which has been rebuilt several times, courtyard excavations revealed that its foundation was built in 14th century. The prosperity of Sohar was supported by a key export, copper which was exported in early times to the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia (now Iraq).
